New Close Farm is a mixed livestock farm stocking native breeds, situated approx. 1000ft above sea level on the edge of the scenic village of Over Haddon, near Bakewell in the Peak District National Park.
The business is run by James Armstrong, his wife Gillian and two sons Thomas & Edward with help from 3 full time employees.
James joined the family business in 1966 at the age of 16, starting work in a slaughterhouse and working his way up through the business following his father’s instruction to learn the trade from beginning to end as he did from his father.
Farming and the meat trade have changed over time and with each new generation comes new ideas and an input of energy and enthusiasm; so it came to pass that when Tom & Ed, who are the 4th generation farmers and butchers, joined the company full time, they decided to move the shop on the farm to a more prominent site in Bakewell town centre.
